  • Erkenntnis und Melancholie in den Waldliedern Nikolaus Lenaus
    Sambunjak, Zaneta, 1974-
In current debates, Waldlieder ('Songs of the Forest,' 1843) by Nikolaus Lenau are considered the most important cycle of his late poetical work. Lenauʼs main theme is melancholy in relation to ... nature. Given the layers of allegorical messages, we conclude that Waldlieder by Nikolaus Lenau are connected to works with the mythical figure of Merlin as the main character. In doing so we can perceive Lenauʼs work as another one with the Middle Ages as the main thematic field. For comparison, there is the relationship between society and nature, death and immortality, melancholy and cognition of importance. In the final consideration it is concluded that Lenauʼs answer to the threatening social reality and to the indifference of the nature in Waldlieder is poetical inspiration and creativity.
