  • A nondestructive experimental approach for heat flux determination on direct-chill cast aluminium alloy billet surface
Založnik, Miha ; Šarler, Božidar ; Bajsič, Ivan
In this paper a new nondestructive experimental method for the determination of the billet surface heat flux in direct-chill casting of aluminium alloys is represented. The knowledge of the heat flux ... on the billet surface is required in numerical simulation of the process. A very expensive destructive measurement method has been used before, where the thermocouples have been immersed into the liquid pool and solidified into the billet that need to be scrapped afterwards. The new method is based on the measurements of the water film temperatures along the billet surface and determination of the local heat flux from the energy balance. Experiments using the new technique and a specially designed thermocouple are carried out in a real plant environment. Comparison of the heat fluxes obtained by the destructive and the new method gave excellent agreement.
