  • Statistical modelling of stochastic surface profiles
Mandelj, Simon ; Grabec, Igor ; Govekar, Edvard
The surface of a workpiece is the result of a machining process, which usually exhibits a stochastic character. Therefore we consider the generated surface profile of a workpiece as a stochastic ... field. A novel non-parametric and non-linear statistical method is developed for modelling stochastic fields based on recorded data. The method is tested on various examples of stochastic fields and surface profiles with different autocorrelation functions. Modelling results demonstrate that the proposed method can be applied for a description of a deterministic component of a surface generator. A modelled surface generator represents compressed information about the surface topography and could thus be interpreted as an exhaustive characteristic of the deterministic properties of the surface under examination.
