In the first part of my thesis, I explore the point of view and focalization of The Hunger Games, a novel by Suzanne Collins that was first published in 2008 and made into a film in 2012, and look at ... the theory of viewer empathy according to the point of view. Written in the first person present tense, The Hunger Games is a dystopian society based story of a teenage girl who finds herself in a televised fight to the death and can only survive by pretending that she is in love. As the key conflict is only present in her mind and never acted or spoken aloud, it presents a unique challenge in transforming the story into a film. The differences made during the transformation are detailed in the second part of my thesis. I collect the most representative online comments by readers and viewers in the third part, reaching the conclusion that although the movie seems to be well received, many viewers who read the book before watching the film, feel that key points are missing in the movie version.
