Library and information science in the European framework programmes

The important factor of information policy is the research done on this subject. The decisions which research projects are funded also reveal the goals and objectives of information policy. This ...paper discusses European Union policy related to library and information science (LIS). We will present the analysis of the Fourth and partly the Fifth European Union Framework Programme covering research, technological development and demonstration activities (Fourth 1994-1998 and Fifth 1998-2002). Projects within it will be analysed by the themes research methods used and institutions participating. We would like to stir the discussion about the possible co-operation on the research work, of course not limited only to the European Union Framework programmess. We will use the framework programmes as a case study to see which projects are supported by the European Union research policy regarding LIS research, to make possible targets or goals for educational institutions in LIS. In recent discussions of LIS education, research is shown as an important basis for successful education programmes. This also is one of the ways to narrow the gap between education and practical application. The research capacity of four field is of urgent importance in these times an it would serve us well to determine how we might best serve the education needs.
