A hip extension is vital after trans-femoral amputation for the gait and control of an above-knee prosthesis. In order to improve the strength and endurance of the great gluteal muscle which is the ...only uncut hip extensor on the amputated side and to teach persons how to contract it, electrical stimulation have been used. The stronger muscle which a person knows how and when to contract, will make more easy to control a prosthetic knee, need less additional support, be able to walk longer and more easily manage steps. The effect of the new therapeutic method, i.e. electrical stimulation of the great gluteal muscle on the rehabilitation outcome of persons after transfemoral amputation was studied. 32 persons after trans-femoral amputation were divided into two groups of 16 persons, a stimulated and control group, and measured. A simple, non-invasive measurement method based on measurements of radial displacement of the muscle belly have been developed for measuring the contractile properties of the great gluteal muscle. The method was tested on 10 healthy men and compared with the measurements of hip extension torque. The sensitivity and reliability of the method was also studied. The influence of electrical stimulation on the rehabilitation outcome was studied by clinical gait analyses and gait measurements. A smaller radial displacement of the great gluteal muscle belly on the amputated side of persons after trans-femoral amputation than in healthy men was observed. The slope of muscle contraction elicited by single electrical stimulus is steeper, indicating the muscle is slower.
