  • The concept of number : old theories awaken
    Svetina, Matija
Recent findings on the development of number understanding lately called attention to old psychological concepts and domains that have up-to-day not been directly attached to cognition. For example, ... experimental data on the development of number understanding indicated the existence of unconscious processes, the concept traditionally addressed in developmental psychodynamic theories; another developmental studies suggested that elementary laws of psychophysics such as Fechner's were found useful in explaining symbolic cognitive processes and number representations in children, and so on. In the present chapter, we address some recent findings on the development of number understanding and argue that theoretical concepts and methodological tools introduced in contemporary cognitive, developmental, or neuropsychological studies may provide old approaches and old concepts with a new insight, and might imply new directions to the research of number understanding.
