    Heterogeneity is characteristic of all learning groups and in particularly heterogeneous groups, internal differentiation is crucial to achieve learning progress in all students. Textbooks as a key ... source of activities play a vital part by helping the teacher outline and perform differentiated learning activities. The research question in the centre of the thesis is: to what extend do textbooks for German as a foreign language for levels A1-B1 support the implementation of internal differentiation for productive skills? This thesis explores different aspects of internal differentiation, its aim and the common obstacles in its way, as well as the role of textbooks in German language teaching. It also presents the findings of the analysis of three textbook materials packages. The findings suggest an over-simplified understanding of the concept of internal differentiation, equating it with differentiation by ability. In the analysed textbooks, the activities incorporating differentiation by ability were also by far the best represented amongst all the aspects of differentiation. Consequently, textbook materials packages cannot be seen as sufficient for planning long-term internal differentiation that would encourage students' development to the fullest.
