  • Sonderbare Begegnungen : zum Bild Kafkas bei Anna Seghers
    Šlibar, Neva
Strange encounter - Anna Seghers' portrait of Franz Kafka in a fictional meeting of the author with E.T.A. Hoffmann and Nikolaj Gogol. - In her short prose text Travel-encounter of 1973 Anna Seghers ... describes a fictive meeting of the three poets in a Prague café, where they discuss important items of their poetics and their works from the point of view of socialist realism and on the background of Anna Seghers' own credo as a politically engaged artist. Kafka, whose reception in the GDR became a political issue in the sixties, gets a prominent place and is introduced with as much as a whole text. The analysis of Seghers' presentation of the author is based on the assumption that Seghers tries to broaden the vulgar social-realist notion of literature by integrating dreams, elements of phantasy and imagination as well as the unconscious but does so by "domesticating" them, which clearly shown by her one-dimensional interpretation of Kafkas' texts. The paper starts with other fictionalizations of Kafka and ends with a delineation of the controversal Kafka-reception in the GDR.
