  • Education for critical citizenship : the impact of teachers` world-view on classroom practice in the teaching of values
    Walkington, Helen ; Wilkins, Chris
This paper reports empirical research suggesting that teachers' broad social and political world-view is consistent with their ideas about the purpose of education and the role of the teacher, and ... that this also impacts directly on their classroom practice. This research finding results from studies relating to the teaching of Citizenship Education in particular, and more widely to theteaching of values. The empirical data comes from two strands. The first examines the social and political attitudes and values of post-graduate student teachers in England, focusing in particular on their notions of citizenship and the role of education in developing "good citizenship". This research also addresses the students' reflections on how their own training had prepared them to educate for citizenship. The second strand describes serving teachers' practice with regard to teaching Global Citizenship and also records the aims that underlie this practice. This paper is intended to open up a discussion of the implications of these findings for teacher education across Europe, both pre-service and in-service.
