  • Contemporary contextual psychological approaches to assessment and treatment of chronic pain
    McCracken, Lance M., 1962-
If we are honest, there is a considerable lack of consensus on what to do with chronic pain in our healthcare settings. Is it best that we medicate, operate, implant, infuse, reject, or accept? ... Clearly there is no simple answer that will be true for every case except perhaps that we assess with care, treat with an honest sense of flexibility, and use whatever practical means we can to help the patient to participate in their life in a more full, free, and vital way. This simple sounding formula will lead the healthcare provider into contact with a problem that is social, emotional, and behavioral in nature, and will require an appreciation of these circumstances, whether the patient's situation appears complex or not. To say that treatment of chronic pain requires a consideration of psychological influences is not a bad thing. Psychological approaches to chronic pain have a very good record of succes and recent advances promise to build on that.
