Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There are two universally known fantasy novels by Lewis Carroll that are full of all types of games. ... This thesis analyzes the various ways in which the 19th-century novelist creates playfulness in Alice's world. The first part of the thesis focuses on playfulness achieved through nonsense, specifically, that which is created through phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. In order to demonstrate this playfulness, we explore the various examples on each of these levels that Carroll includes in the Alice books, together with several puns that appear in the text. The second part investigates the concepts of time and space in Alice's world. First, we look at the formal approach to time and space and the narratological techniques connected to these two concepts. Moreover, we examine the particular rules of chronotope that only appear in Wonderland, and how they affect the reader and Alice.
