Background. Inhalation therapy is an important and widespread method of treatment of obstructive pulmonary diseases. Among its advantages one finds high concentration of the drug at the site of ...action and lowered frequency andintensity of systemic side effects. For ane effective inhalation treatment,a high degree of patient adherence based on adequate education, appropriately trained medical and nursing staff, and the use of respective inhalers and spacers are necessary. In the present investigation, the degree of appropriate use of inhalers and spacers was studied. Reasons for the inappropriate use of medicines and for inadequate patient awareness of the inhalation therapy specifics were addressed. The usage distribution of particular forms of inaddressed. The usage distribution of particular forms ofinhalers and inhalation medicines were surveyed. Methods. Questionnaire was prepared for adult patients and the paretns of pediatric patients treated in the Pulmology department of the Maribor General Hospital, in Pulmologic ClinicSlovenska Bistrica, in a private general practice ambulatory care, and in Alergology-Pulmology Clinic of the Pediatric Clinical department at the Maribor General Hospital. The patients who were on inhalation drug therapy in the period of March 1997 to August 1997 were included. The appropriatenes of the use of inhalation medicines was assessed by competent physicians. Results.Among 164 participating patients, 117 were adults and 47 pediatric patients. In the adult and pediatric groups, 45% and 26% of the patients were not using the medicines appropriately, respictively.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
