Voluntary informed consent, anonymity, and protection of personal data are fundamental issues of research ethics, disciplinary ethics tradition; in part, this area is regulated by the Personal Data Protection Act of the Republic of Slovenia. Protection of privacy and confidentiality of research subjects is important because of potential consequences that might result from their disclosure. It is also essential to be aware that even the most well-meaning and consistent protection of privacy and of confidential information might not prevent the subjects of research from being identified. The type of anonymity generally used in ethnology is personal, local, and collective. This anonymity, however, is often avoided, which is not due to a research convenience but to specific requirements of this discipline.
