"The Mirror of Great Britain": national identity in seventeenth-century British architecture, edited by Olivia Horsfall Turner, Reading, Spire Books Ltd, 2012, 288 pp., £34.95 (hardback), ISBN 978-1-904965-38-1 This edited collection is the result of a conference held in 2010 by the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain. ...Maudlin looks at Blackhouses - a nineteenth-century English mistranslation of the word "tugadh" (264), meaning thatch house rather than black house (tigh dubh). According to him, the size and scale of Pennsylvania houses stress the social status of the (lesser) "members of the land- owning gentry" (246) found in the new world, by mimicking the size and style of those back in England.
