Gymnastic practices developed at gyms propose/impose, standardize and naturalize particular relationships of power/ knowledge among their followers. As from these practices, people can now control and correct their bodies but this condition does not necessarily make them more independent and knowledgeable about their corporal practices or discourses. When power becomes a form of domination, the generated body education does not allow for any kind of resistance or questioning; therefore, people cannot use the knowledge gained critically in order to govern their body choices. The aim of this article is two-fold: to analyse some concepts belonging to Michel Foucault such as subject, discourse, praxis, power, dominion and discipline; and to examine Inés Dussel and Marcelo Carusso’s concept of education. Finally, these various theoretical approaches will be used to establish some initial and provisional conclusions that may help us to understand the nature and dynamics of some collective gym classes at a gym in the city of La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina), in which empirical data was collected through participant observation. This paper is part of our dissertation project for the MA Degree Program in Physical Education: “La gimnasia en los gimnasios, ni educación, ni física”.
