The CFE Treaty has been a huge success, achieving the elimination of thousands of tanks and other armaments across Europe. However, the bloc-to-bloc context in which the Treaty was originally negotiated has been overtaken by the transformed security situation in Europe. The author explains how the challenge of adapting the Treaty to the new parameters of European security has been taken up by NATO.
