  • Vacuum measurements in image intensifier electron tubes
    Šetina, Janez ; Erjavec, Bojan
A nondestructive method to determine the pressure in the sealed second generation image intensifier electron tubes was investigated. This method is based on the ionizing collisions of electrons with ... the residual gas molecules,a phenomena which is inherent with the operation of all electron tubes. Minute ion currents caused by photoelectrons passing through the electron-optical system were measured. In addition, the ion currents could also be multiplied on the microchannel plate which is the essential component of the second generation image intensifiers. A manipulator which connects the sealed electron tubes to the UHV system was constructed. With the manipulator the sealed tubes could be opened in UHV. The effects of residual gases on the operation of the electron tubes could be examined by varying the residual gases in the UHV system. Introducing nitrogen into the UHV system at known pressures the sensitivity of a particular electron tube geometry for vacuum measurements was calibrated.
