    Herein we report an unexpected phenomenon regarding the structural properties of a model drug indomethacin when confined into nano-dimensions. We show that the confinement directs the transformation ... of the nanocrystals of form beta into the stable form gama, which is, otherwise, not obtained at all in the phase transition of bulk form beta. Moreover, the relative amount of nanocrystals of form gama depends on the pore size. We demonstrate that, already at relatively low mass fractions, the confined drug forms crystals in a way that they obstruct the passage of the pore. We used a variety of techniques for the characterization of the confined drug, specifically He-pycnometry in combination with thermal analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Our findings may have far- reaching consequences for understanding the mechanisms of drug incorporation and optimization of drug release from mesoporous materials.
