  • Alkaline earth metal-based coordination polymers : from design to application

    The development of coordination polymers or metal-organic frameworks (MOF) is one of the most intensively investigated topics in the field of nanoporous materials. Their crystalline framework is ... composed of metal-based building units which are connected through organic ligands to three-dimensional structure. The number of new MOF structures is increasing rapidly, because their frameworks with the targeted applicative properties can be developed by rational design. This however requires proper knowledge of interaction behaviour between metal cations and functional groups of organic linkers in different synthetic conditions (temperature and time of crystallization, molarratio of starting components, choice of solvent, etc.). The pores within synthesized metalorganic frameworks are often filled with solvent or template molecules and crystalline structure is usually significantly changed after removal of those moieties. In fact, majority of MOF networks are flexible and respond intensively also upon other external stimuli (temperature or pressure changes, solvent exchange). The knowledge of structural dynamics of flexible frameworks is important to predict their behavior in different conditions. Framework flexibility is also one of the most interesting characteristic of metalorganic structures which can be exploited for various applications such as sensing, separation and adsorption. The investigations of MOFs are mostly performed on transition metal-based materials. However, MOFs based on alkaline earth metal cations (Mg-and Ca-MOFs in particular) deserve special attention. They are advantageous for implementation and industrial application (bioapplication, gas storage) due to their nontoxicity and relatively low-density frameworks. In spite of the potential application opportunities that this group of MOFs offers, alkaline earth metal-organic frameworks are relatively poorly investigated. In this contribution we focusedon the case studies of the design, structural dynamic investigations and application opportunities of Mg- and Ca-based coordination polymers. Firstly, the influence of solvent composition (water/ethanol) on the framework dimensionality will be discussed for magnesium 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate system. We showed that the dimensionality of the framework can be tuned by changes of water/ethanol ratio in starting reaction mixture. Investigation on framework dynamics upon heating and hydration will be presented for the case of new calciumterephthalate structure. The mechanism of phase transitions was proposed by spectroscopic methods (IR, NMR, XAS) and confirmed by XRD analysis. Finally degradation studies of Mg- and Ca-based MOFs with biocompatible aliphatic ligands (succinates, glutarates andpimelates) for potential bio-applications will be discussed.
