  • What is useful for the validation of economic theory?
    Močnik, Dijana
In the paper we explore an important aspect of the reputation of economists. It is well known that economists seldom are able to agree on anything. What is less clear is why economists agree when ... they do agree. Do they agree because they accept the results of successful predictions derived from economic theories? Is consensus reached because of the results of controlled experiments in the leading journals of the profession? Do they agree on the basis of hypothesis tests conducted with historical data and econometric techniques? Or does the observed degree of consensus arise through the consistent use of deductive logic starting from a set of true axioms about human behaviour? In fact economists seem to agree on many things. But the basis for this agreement is often obscure. A growing number of prominent economists are expressing concern about trends in economic research and teaching. It is pluralism that has much to add to it if it contributes to tolerance and broadens the scope of inquiry in a discipline. Systems thinking could make its background.
