    Anxiety is one of the major factors that can affect foreign language learning outcomes. Students with a high anxiety factor are difficult to identify because they can easily be confused with ... unmotivated or poorly prepared students. This paper examines the causes of anxiety in foreign language speaking and its impact on learning. In the empirical part, we present the analysis of the survey, which included 112 students from three Slovenian high schools. Data were collected through a standardized questionnaire by Horwitz, Horwitz, and Cope (1986). We were interested in whether there are differences between students who have learned German as a foreign language in primary school and those who started to learn German in high school. The collected and analyzed data showed no significant differences between two groups. However, we did discover that students are mostly afraid of oral assessment, bad grades, class presentations, and failure. Fear can cause a significant impact on the attitudes and behavior of students, and this is reflected in students' achievements. In the classroom is therefore necessary to develop strategies to overcome anxiety.
