  • "--- ich sollte sie wie meine Mutter halten" : das Konzept des guten Menschen in Robert Musil Amsel
    Nuber, Jörn
"[...] and I was supposed to think of her as my mother - but itʼs possible to get used to anything [...]"- this cryptic sentence (orig.: "ich sollte sie halten wie meine Mutter") seems to be the ... conclusion of the eventful and to some extent mystical life of Azwei, the main character of Robert Musilʼs short story "The Blackbird" (1928). In the course of the narrative, Azwei tends explains what a good soul is. Hitherto analyses of the short-story focus especially on the Epiphanies in terms of what Musil characterizes as der andere Zustand (the Other Condition). The role of formative habits that is illustrated in various motifs and allegories throughout the whole text is lost against the background. This imprinting occurs only covertly and is permanently hidden behind the spontaneity and stubbornness of the main character. But, essentially, the habit provides a key for a new comprehension of the story. The analysis of corresponding passages and the reconstruction of habitualizing experiences make for a scheme that hints at the sentence quoted above. In the end, that which Azwei believes to be a good soul may be rendered accessible.
