This dissertation attempts to show the relationship between language and society, mainly the influence of social structure on language by comparing dictionary definitions of basic kinship terms over ...the last fifty years. It first provides a theoretical framework, presenting the significance of dictionaries, basic postulates of sociolinguistics and the role of kinship systems in language and society. Seeing that every kinship system is founded on marriage and family, it further expands on these two concepts and reviews them from an anthropological, as well as sociological point of view. It then offers an extensive overview of the history of family, starting with prehistoric times and the circumstances that brought about the formation of family as we know it today. The summary of the history of family is rounded off with an overview of family changes that have taken place in Great Britain and the United States since the 1960s, providing the basis for the practical analysis. The practical part of the thesis focuses on the developments in kinship terminology that have occurred as a result of the changes in family structure in both American and British societies. The dictionary analysis includes vocabulary terms denoting basic kinship ties, marital relations and other equivalent relationships, and family. By contrasting the old and modern word meanings, the thesis examines the scope of changes that have occurred in the Western society and their impact on the English language.
