  • Environmental stress and contemporary understanding of human-built environment relations : study case on Zero-Waste City Ljubljana
Grum, Bojan ; Kobal Grum, Darja
In the paper, we systematically review the impact that research on environmental stress, i.e., poor housing, and neighbourhood quality, has had on the current understanding of the relationship ... between humans, and the environment. It is shown that poor quality housing, high noise levels, lack of natural light in the house, poorer physical quality of neighbourhoods, living in low-income neighbourhoods, etc. are associated with increased physiological and psychological stress. We believed that built environmental relationships are closely related to attitudes towards waste in the neighbourhood. We focus on transforming our society so that all unnecessary waste is disposed of and everything that is produced can be reused, repaired, composted, or returned to the system. In a growing number of regions, local groups of individuals, businesses and municipalities are taking significant steps to eliminate waste in our society. We highlight the case study: Zero Waste City, Ljubljana, which is the first European capital to be on the way to Zero Waste. We confirmed the hypotheses that there is a strong sustainable interaction between the psychological processes underlying human behaviour and the built environment and that during sustainable construction environmental factors, waste management expresses these interactions at night. We believe that the positive effects of research can only be achieved with sustainable interactions between the psychological processes underlying human behaviour and the built environment.
