    Since man is organically bound up with the machines and tools he works with itis imperative to pay more attention to the question of how much these instruments are adapted to man's physical and ... psychical abilities. Instruments constructed with a consideration of the technological aspects of work only are often such that even a competent worker will fail to reach the desired effect and that they tire him out to a degree not necessary. An approach which may be instrumental in an adequate solution of the suitability of machines and tools requires: 1. the cooperation of experts in technology and of experts dealing with man for the construction of different variants of instruments which in varying ways take into account both the demands of work and the abilities of man; 2. a test of the proposed variants in a controlled situation on the basis of which it will be possible to determine their suitability with regard to the given criterion. To illustrate methodological process in the assesment of the adequacy of tools we have chosen the problem of the selection of the optimal combination of the hammer and the nail with regard to the criterion ofthe speed of work. By a statistical analysis of the data given by the analysis it has been established that there exist significant differences in the speed of work with various combinations of the hammer and nail. It has also been established which are the combinations that are most suitable in particular cases of the limitations stemming from the pratical situations. Certain differences have been brought to light which exist between the resultsof the experiment and the intuitive opinion about the suitability of various combinations of tools.
