  • Flash flood in Slovenia in 1990 : damage and protection
    Brilly, Mitja ; , Michael
Slovenia is positioned on the Southern side of the Alps. More than two thirds of its teritory are mountainous alpine and hilly areas threatened by flash floods and landslides. Many heavy floods have ... occurred in the last few years due to typical frontal orographic precipitation. Damages are caused mainly by landslides and river bank erosion. A flood protection system comprised of rainforecast, public information system, civil security guard, water authority etc., is in effect. The most important aspect of flood protection is the realistic heavy rain forecast on time. The main questions are: how, and at which time before a rainfall event the realistic warnings could be made. Activities of water authorities are very important prior to and after the flood. Zoning, landscape planning, construction of flood protection structures, are the main activities prior to a flood. After the flood reports, reconstruction of damaged structures, and similar activities are undertaken
