    A critical perspective on the development and definition of coaching and coaching psychology in theory and practice is essential for the development of this fairly recent form of psychology-based ... intervention in the workplace. This article considers professional issues and highlights psychological principles and approaches to coaching that may arise in practice. Both theoretical and practical elements require equal critical consideration by firstly evaluating the nature and functions of coaching and coaching psychology in organisations; secondly, discussing the primary functions of coaching in comparison to psychotherapy, counselling and mentoring; and thirdly, by reflecting on the key psychological elements of coaching. Finally, it is imperative to acknowledge the complexity involved in implementing a coaching programme as a resource for managing talent within an organisation and the implications for leadership development and executive coaching in fast changing organisational practices in the western world.
