  • Dependence of melting rate in MIG/MAG welding on the type of shielding gas used
Suban, Marjan ; Tušek, Janez, 1952-
In industrial applications of MIG/MAG welding processes, various types of shielding gases, including one-component and up to four-component gas mixtures, are used. The main criterion for selection of ... a suitable gas mixture for a certain application is the quality of the welded joint required. In the 1990s, new high-productivity process variants, e.g. TIME, RAPID PROCESSING, LINFAST, made their appearance. Development of the TIME process has been based mainly on increase in productivity of welding in a gas mixture. It is important that the quality of the welded joint does not become impaired. The question arises, however, whether the type of shielding medium used actually affects welding productivity. The paper describes a study on welding productivity, i.e. melting efficiency of the filler material (solid and cored wires) in various shielding media (four shielding gases and a welding flux). A mathematical model for prediction of a melting rate in TIME welding with solid and cored wires is presented too. A comparison of mathematical models for MIG/MAG welding in Ar/CO2 gas mixture and TIME mixture, respectively, is also made.
