  • Analysis of the appearance of extremely low water levels of the Vrana Lake on Cres island (Croatia)
    Ožanić, Nevenka ; Rubinić, Josip
The Vrana lake is a special natural phenomenon: 220 million m3 of fresh lake water in the island karst, in the immediate vicinity of the sea. The lake is a part of the wider island karst aquifer ... which is recharged and discharged through unlocated underground passages. Although there is no possibility to monitor the quantity of its inflow and runoff, the lake system behavior patterns have been detected from the available monitoring data of the lake water table fluctuations dynamics under various hydrodynamics conditions and by using the mathematical hydrological model. The appearances of extremely low water levels during 1985 till 1990 period have been analysed by that model called "Vrana". It has been determined that the observed lowering of the waterlevel in the lake was the result of the coincidence of extremely dry hydrological conditions and increased consumption of the water from the lake (pumping)
