  • Fast and efficient methods for quality evaluation of ink-jet printed papers
    Muck, Tadeja ; Hladnik, Aleš
Paper chromatography and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) are two efficient achieved with the coating colour based on a combination of two pigments: precipitated calcium carbonate and silica in 1:1 ... ratio. analytical methods that can be used as a tool for characterization of interactions between the ink (dye) and the paper surface in ink-jet printing. Both methods enable determination of ink adhesion rate as a function of fibre composition, pigment type, amount of binder and dye fixation agent, etc. Paper chromatography was used for investigation of influence of fibre type and dye fixative on ink adhesion rate (comparison of Rf values) and on waterfastness of prints performed on uncoated papers. The results suggested that the Canon printing ink is more suitable for printing on papers containingpredominantly bleached wood-free, i.e. chemical fibres, whereas the HP ink proved more appropriate for papers made of mechanical pulp. Addition ofas little as 1 wt % of dye fixative improved print waterfastness significantly. TLC was especially useful when trying to optimize coating colour recipes for papers, intended for photo-quality prints.
