  • Diesel engine characteristics using biodiesel [Elektronski vir]
    Kegl, Breda ; Pehan, Stanislav
This paper deals with the engine characteristics using mineral diesel and domestic biodiesel fuel produced from rapeseed. The influence of biodiesel is investigated by running experiments on an NA ... diesel bus engine MAN D2 2566 with direct injection M system at different engine operating regimes. At first the influences of different fuel on the most important injection characteristics are investigated on the test bench Friedmann-Maier. Using experimental results on the injection test bench the influences of fuel density, viscosity, sound velocity and bulk modulus on fuelling, mean injection rate, mean injection pressure, injection duration are determined. Furthermore, the fuel spray characteristics of biodiesel are recorded with the high-speed camera and compared with those of mineral diesel. The spray characteristics are analyzed with respect to the fuel density, viscosity and surface tension. Finally, the engine characteristics are determined on engine test bench. The engine characteristics obtained with biodiesel are compared against those obtained using mineral D2 diesel. In this way the influences of calorific fuel value and cetane number on engine harmful emissions, specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency and engine power are investigated. The engine as well as the injection system were monitored for possible operation problems and carefully examined after the tests. The analysis of presented experimentally obtained results shows a promising potential for using biodlesel in diesel engines.
