  • Chemical and mineralogical studies on lead matte in contact with moisture
Paulin, Andrej ; Dobnikar, Meta, 1964- ; Herlec, Uroš
Lead matte obtained as waste in smelting scrap lead batteries is disintegrated when dumped. Thus the mechanism od disintegration was studied with the matte from Mezica Lead Smelter in Slovenia. ... X-ray, metallographic, and mineralogical studies revealed that main constituens of matte were galenite and troillite which crystallized the first in the process of solidification, but they were stable. Sodium formed iron-sodium sulphides and double sulphates which were either products of oxidation of sulphides in air or, according to some indications, even originally present in matte. Oxidationof sodium sulphides and especially their hydration was responsible for matte disintegration. In solidification of matte, they crystalliyed the last, forming a network. And after being extracted by water, voids were left as cracks in matte. The drained solution was found to be elakaline. This confirmed the plant practice that matte must be first stabilized by water treatment in basins before dumping on specially prepared slag dumps.
