  • Kronična driska po vrnitvi iz tropskih krajev = Chronic diarrhea after returning from tropics
    Pikelj Pečnik, Andreja, 1969- ; Radšel-Medvešček, Alenka
With an increasing number of people travelling to the developing countries, the number of people with gastrointestinal problems, especially diarrhea, is increasing. 1% of such diarrhea lasts 4 weeks ... or more. The most common cause are parasites, but also some bacteria, fungi or viruses. Tropical sprue and lactic intolerance are specific entities for the tropics and are seen in people who stayed in endemic countries for a longer period of time. People with AIDS are especially at risk, because the course of the disease is more severe and it lasts longer. Confirmation on cysts or vegetative forms of the parasites in the stool is the most reliable way to make a diagnosis. Effectivetreatment usually consist of a combination of symptomatic therapy andthe administration of an adequate chemotherapeutic. If isolation is not successful, other, noninfectious causes of chronic diarrhea need to be considered.
