Most book on medicinal plants classify the greater celandine among poisonous plants, stating at the same tome the different ways it can be used. The instryctions on drug classification in Slovenia ... place the greater celandine into the group ZR, which means that this drug and its extracts for internal use can only be acquired on prescription. When used externally, there is not supposed to be any danger of poisoning or skin damage, however, the drug should not come in contact with mucous membranes. When applied to the tongue, the sap causes a burning sensation, which also appears in the throat and the esophagus. Care must be taken when consuming celandine extracts, as the literature points out instances of liver activity disorders and even medicinal hepatitis
