  • In defence of actual intentionalism
    Kante, Božidar
The article analyses two, in Levinson's eyes, would-be advantages of hypothetical intention alism over actual intentionalism. The first one is that it preserves the intuitive difference between what ... ends up being said and what some agent was trying to say, that is, what someone meant. The second would-be advantage of hypothetical intentionalism concerns the autonomy or centrality of the work: works retain, in the last analysis, a certain autonomy from the actual mental processes of their creators. I argue that the would-be advantages of hypothetical intentionalism are in fact only would-be advantages and hypothetical intentionalism fares no better than actual intentionalism
