    Background: Improved perinatal care has increased the survival rate of prematurely born infants. 6-18 % registered visually impaired children were prematurely born, a fact which emphasizes the effect ... of premature birth on visual function and development. Methods, Results: The ophthalmological aspectof prematurity and its problems are the main content of the article, with a general overview of pathogenesis, classification scheme and therapy of retinolathy of prematurity. Since refractive errors, strabismus and visual impairment, especially after preterm brain lesions, are more common in pretermbabies, it is stressed not to underestimate this pathology. Conclusion:It is the responsibility of pediatric ophthalmologists to organize screening and therapy programmes for retinopathy of prematurity and to follow up the preterm infant's visual development.
