  • Tamsulozin - novo zdravilo za zdravljenje benigne hiperplazije prostate = Tamsulozin - a new drug for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia
    Tršinar, Bojan
Background. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most frequent diseases in older men. The lower urinary tract symptoms of BPH can be treated also with drugs which selectively block alpha ... adrenergic receptors in smooth muscles cells within the prostatic stroma, capsule and bladder neck. Tamsulosin is a newdrug among alpha adrenergic blockers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tamsulosin. Patients and methods. In open, non-controlled, nulticentre study 66 patients, average 63.2 years with clinical symptoms and signs of BPH were included. All patients werereceiving tamsulosin 0.4 mg per day for 12 weeks. Before and after the endof the treatment they had to fulfill two questioners:International ProstateSymptom Score (IPSS) and Quality of Life (QL). They had to state side effects of drug, too. For statistical analyses we used Student t-test. Results. All 66 patients finished the study according to the demanding deadline. After 12 weeks tamsulosin statistically significant decreased the total number of points in IPSS from average 16.7 to 8.4 (p<0.005). The qualityof life improved significant from 3.2 to 1.6 points (p<0.005). Only 8 (12%) patients stated some mild and reversible side effects during the study. Conclusions. Alfa adrenergic antagonist tamsulosin is an effective and save drug for the treatment of patients with lower urimary tract symptoms suggestive of BPH.
