Background. H1 antihistamines are important drugs for allergic rhinitis or conjunctivitis. Antihistaminic tests have mainly been compared with placebo effects in clinical tests. Significantly less ... clinical comparisons among particular antihistamines have been made. Patients and methods. In the study we compared the cetirizine or loratadine effect and tolerance in patients withallergic rhinitis or allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. 66 patients were included in the study. 59 patients were convenient for statistical processing.By random selection the patients were treated by cetirizine or by loratadine. Every morning in the study period the patients received 10 mg of cetirizine (A group) or loratadine (B group). The study lasted for 14 days. Weevaluated general symptoms (headache, fatigue, concentration disorders, and sleep disorders), nose symptoms (sneeze, nose itch, nose percolation, and noseocclusion), and eyes symptoms (eyes itch, lacrimation, and conjunctives injection), took notes of side effects, and monitored treatment clinically andelectrocardiographically. Results. Cetirizine and loratadine significantly decreased all studied general symptoms and allergic rhinitis or allergic conjunctivitis symptoms. In the cetirizine group the symptoms explicitness wasstatistically significantly decreased in time, save with the lacrimation symptom. In the loratadine group the symptoms explicitness was statistically significantly decreased in time, save with headache symptoms and concentrationdisorders. By means of the t-test we found out that in the fatigue symptom decrease cetirizine was more efficient than loratadine. With other symptoms the difference was not statistically significant. But with no symptom the double factor variant analysis showed statistically significant difference between the groups as to the time and type of treatment. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
