Depression is a common health problem but studies have suggested that despite several efficient treatment possibilities it is often inadequately treated in general practice. A representative sample ... of Slovene general practitioners wasstudied to examine their treatment patterns of commonly occuring clinical situation. A study was carried out using a questionnaire with a case study of a women with depression. We have examined also which factors influenced their decision making process. A questionnaire was returned by 75% of participants. 80% of GPs would treat patient by themselves and 20% would refer the patient to a psychiatrist. Only about 61% of GPs have chosen expected treatment, although the vast majority of them adequately identified clinical depression. The study has also given important information about the factors influencing adequate treatment.
