  • Towards a new role of subject-related didactics in the wider context of teacher education

    In this paper, the author aims to examine the role of Didactics of English (subject-related didactics) in the wider context of contemporary language teacher education. He begins by pointing to the ... difference between our conceptualisation of didactics and methodology, and then presents some contemporary views on the relationship between subject-related didactics and general didactics and on the pedagogical vs. didactic relation in the so-called didactic triangle (teacher-learner-content triangle). In the last part of his paper the author summarises some recent views, especially within the TNTEE (Thematic Network for Teacher Education in Europe), on the new role of didactics and subject-related didactics as a transformational science of teaching and learning which has potential to develop a scientific knowledge base of and for the teaching profession. Recent developments in many countries in Europe and the world suggest that models of teacher education that are solely based on traditional (and compartmentalised) scientific disciplines are increasingly giving way to a new and conceptually different approach which is characterised, above all, by a central role of the interdisciplinary (and meta-disciplinary) science of the teaching profession
