    Homocysteine has been proposed as an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic and thrombotic disease. Although there are several possible explanations for its deleterious effect on blood vessels ... its precise role is still unknown. It is possible to lower blood homocysteine by treating patientswith folic acid and vitamin B6 arid B 12. This treatment is probably useful in high-risk patients with atherosclerosis, but definite recommendations for the management of hyperhomocysteinemia await the completion of randomized trials. The same is true for the role of homocysteinemia in deep vein thrombosis:
