    High-altitude retinopathy (HAR) is characterized by changes in the retina occuring normally at altitudes above 3000 m above sea level. We conducted stereophotography of the eye fundus of all members ... of the Si.mobil Ski Everest2000 expedition, whose goal was to enable the expedition leader to ski from the summit of Mt. Everest to base camp. Two members of the expedition presented with HAR upon return to Ljubljana. One member had suffered severe high-altitude sickness, whereas the second had no signs and symptoms of high-altitude sicknes, his retinopathy was most likely induced by extreme physical exertion at the altitutde of skiing from Mt Everest to base camp. Since HAR is also a precursorof high altitude sickness, it is a useful index of impending high altitude cerebral edema. However, its occurrence may also beattributed to extreme physical effort at the altitude.
