  • Napredovali rak kože = Advanced skin cancer
    Jančar, Boris
The incidence of skin cancer is increasing worldwide as well as in Slovenia, which ranks second in the world for this cancer incidence. Skin cancer is a disease mainly contracted by elderly people in ... their sixties or seventies. At this age, the general health status of patients is usually poor, and the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases, blood disorders, and other diseases is rather high. In the light of the above, surgery as a treatment modality may often be risky or dangerous, which renders it impossible. As a rule, surgery of large tumours is most complicated because of their bulkiness and infiltration into neighbouring organs, which additionally restricts the chances for surgical treatment. In the treatment of large advanced skin tumours, radiotherapy is frequently the only choice. Radiotherapy is often applied with curative purposes in elderly patients regardless of their old ageand poor performance status. Application of palliative radiotherapy can also be successful in reducing the complications related to tumour growth and ensuring long-term remission.
