  • Zdravljenje s kortikosteroidi v otroški nevrologiji = Treatment with corticosteroids in child neurology
    Rener-Primec, Zvonka ; Neubauer, David
In child neurology, corticosteroids find their place chiefly in the treatment of acute or chronic autoimmune inflammatory diseases of muscles, nerves and the central nervous system. Corticosteroids ... are therefore used to treat acute deymelinating disorders such as multiple sclerosis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, chronic inflammatory polyneuropathies, acute postinfectiouscerebellitis with a severe course, dermatomyositis and polimyositis, transverse myelitis and brainstem myelitis, as well as other less frequent conditions. The central nervous system may also be affected in systemic autoimmune disorders, mostly due to vasculitis (arteritis), in which steroids are the treatment of choice. A special area is acute head injury, where steroids have an anti-oedema action. Corticosteroids are also used in certain types of epilepsies and epileptic syndromes, such as infantile spasms, myoclonic astatic epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and in the syndromeof continuous spike-and-wave during sleep (another indication is the Landau-Kleffner syndrome), and, of course, in status epilepticus. Several modes of treatment with corticosteroids, either as a pulse with high doses over short intervals, or as lower doses over a longer treatment period, are presented.
