  • Površinska hrapavost akrilatnih materialov = Surface roughness of acrylic resin materials
    Kuhar, Milan
Background: A rough denture base surface promotes adhesion of microorganisms and plaque formation. A smooth acrylic surface is achieved by polishing. The polishability of individual acrylic resin ... materials is an important factor influencing the surface roughness of the denture base. The objective of this study was to compare the surface roughness and porosity of three different acrylic resins before and after polishing. Material and methods: Using contactprofilometric measurements and scanning electron microscopy, the surface texture of 81 specimens of autopolymerizing, heat-polymerizing and injected acrylic resin were studied after polymerization on glass, cutting with a tungsten carbide bur, and polishing with three different polishing techniques. Mean surface roughness (Ra) values for each specimen group were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and the Scheffe post-hoc test. Results: The highest mean surface roughness value was measured for surfaces finished with atungsten carbide bur. The lowest surface roughness values were determined forspecimens polished with a lathe and polishing paste. Surface roughness was influenced mainly by the finishing and polishing procedure and to a lesser extent by the acrylic resin material. The presence of large pores and rough surfaces was characteristic of autopolymerizing resin specimens. Conclusions: The surface of autopolymerizing resin is very likely to remain porous and consequently rougher than the surface of heat-polymerizing resin even after adequate polishing.
