    Hovnik-Keršmanc, Marjetka
Starting-point. Alcohol abuse is an urgent problem for many countries and the number of its consequences increases with alcohol consumption per capita. for this reason the authoress tried to compare ... alcohol consumption and selected negative consequences of alcohol consumption in Slovenia with those in Europe.Materials and methods of work. Data source on alcohol consumption per capita (1980 -1996) and selected negative consequences of alcohol consumption (1985 - 1951 in Slovenia and in European region was the data base of the WorldHealth Organization "Health for all". Trend of alcohol consumption per capita and its negative consequences for the observed period was assessed by linear trend. Differences in alcohol consumption per inhabitant and its negative consequences between Slovenia and European average were assessed through t-test. Results. Annual alcohol consumption in Slovenia oscillated between 9,2 and 12,9 litres per capita and exceeded the European average (p<0,01 ) in all the observed years. Age-standardized death rates on 100.000 inhabitants CASD) for chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis was between 34,00 and 45,75, and was decreasing but nevertheless exceeding the average for Europe (p<0,01 ). ASD for external causes of injuries and poisonings was between 82,41 and 109,18, it was decreasing and was from 1992 onwards under European average(p<0,01 ). ASD for traffic accidents with motor vehicles oscillated between 18,80 and 24,04 and exceeded European average (p<0,01 ). A5D for homicides oscillated between 1,32 and 2,49 and was lower than Europeanaverage (p<0,01 ). ASD for suicides was between 27,21 and 34,54, it was decreasing but exceeding European average (p<0,01 ). The number of trafficaccidents linked with alcohol oscillated between 34,05 and 50,80 on 100.000 inhabitants and did not difter signiticantly from the European average. Conclusion.
