Background. Acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) and arterial hypertension are frequent complications of chronic renal failure. ACKD can be detected by ultrasonography. Its prevalence and grade ... increase with the duration of chronic renal failure. Its most significant complication is the development ofrenal cell carcinoma. So far, arterial hypertension has not been described as a complication of ACKD although it is very common in dialysis patients. Theaim of the study was to assess the prevalence and grade of ACKD and its possible correlation with arterial hypertension in haemodialysis (HD) patients. Patients and methods. The study included 86 patients (46 males and 40 females aged 17 to 79; mean age of 51,3 years; SD`14,4) with end-stage renal failure, regularly dialysed in our dialysis centre. The average durationof haemodialysis treatment amounted to 55,3 months (the range being 1-217 months and the median 37,5 months). Patients with known adult polycystickidney disease, tricuspid insufficiency and cor pulmonale were excluded. Patients were examined by an ATLHDI 3000 ultrasound device with a 2-4 MHz convex probe. Each kidney was assessed for the presence and number of cysts and the presence of solid lesions. Depending on the number of cysts in the kidney, the appearances were classified into three grades: grade 0: no cysts; grade 1: less than ten cysts in both kidneys; grade 2: more than ten cysts in both kidneys. 30 minutes before haemodialysis and after it, blood pressure was measured with a traditional mercury sphygmomanometer on the upperarm, where patients did not have arteriovenous fistula. One-month values were analysed. Arterial hypertension was defined as the value of systolic blood pressure of >= 150 mmHg, the value of diastolic blood pressure of >= 90 mmHg, and even lower blood pressure in case of treatment by antihypertensive medication.
