Subscription (subscriptio) as the medieval diplomatic corroboration formula appears mostly as a signature left by the participants in the legal act (cf. Brković 1995, Stipišić 1985). This paper will ...explore the expressions used by notaries to sign the Croatian texts of the Lovran Notebook (Kvaderna), namely the collection of scribal documents of the Lovran chapter, with entries dating from the 15th to 18th centuries (published in Viškanić 2002). A typology of subscription expressions is given, with particular emphasis on the distribution and function of the first person pronoun ja, phoric relations, and word order in the specific context of the conventional legal discourse.
prijevodu
Novoga teštamenta
(ćirilično izdanje, 1563) u usporedbi sa
staroslavenskim (
Zografsko evanđelje
), ...hrvatskostaroslavenskim (Prvotisak),
ostalim starohrvatskim prijevodima (
Lekcionar Bernardina Splićanina
,
Kašićeva i Katančićeva
Biblija
), latinskim (Erazmov prijevod), Lutherovim
njemačkim prijevodom te engleskim prijevodom iz Ženevske Biblije. Primjeri se
klasificiraju s obzirom na semantička obilježja. Kognitivna utemeljenost u
konceptualnoj metafori ZNATI JE VIDJETI i kulturnom modelu GLEDANJA pokazuje se središnjim obilježjem razmatranih primjera dok se obilježavanje
distinkcije prostornih odnosa blizine/udaljenosti od govornika pokazuje rubnim
obilježjem. Time se u dijakronijskoj perspektivi izjednačuju jezici s trodijelnom
shemom prezentativa s jezicima koji imaju samo jedan opći uzvični deiktik.
The
paper deals with sentences introduced by the demonstrative
evo
(“look”) in the Croatian Reformation translation of the
New Testament
(Cyrillic book from 1563)
in comparison with Old Church Slavonic (the Zograf Gospel), Church
Slavonic-Croatian (the First printed Croatian Glagolitic mass-book), and with
the other Old Croatian translations (Lectionary of Bernardin Splićanin, Kašić’s
and Katančić’s Bible), Latin (translation by Erasmus), Luther’s German
translation, and the English translation from the Geneva Bible. Examples are
classified according to the semantic features. Cognitive grounding in the
conceptual metaphor knowing is seeing
and in the cultural model of seeing
is discussed as a salient feature of the analysed examples, while the marking
of the distinction proximal/distal is presented as a marginal feature. In this
way, in the diachronic perspective, languages with a three-part system of
demonstratives are equated with languages that have only one general
interjection in the demonstrative function.
The paper examines semantic features and functions of free relative clauses with pronominal relativizers, represented in the Croatian Glagolitic folk medicine books from the 14
, 15
and 18
centuries. ...Prediction, projection and topicality are singled out as central conceptual and functional features of the expressions studied. The examples are interpreted from the aspect of construction grammar and the pragmatic aspect, and therefore a schematic representation of mental spaces forming the basis for the selected relative clauses has been constructed using the methodology presented in Dancygier and Sweetser (2005). The expressions studied are also viewed in the context of the titling function, as well as in the context of all relative clauses in the studied corpus and have therefore also been linked to the specific features of the text type and certain diachronic changes in their use have been observed.
The paper focuses on the phonological, morphological, and lexical variants in the text of the Epistle on Sunday, written by the priest Mikula from Lindar in 1379 which was added at the end of the Glagolitic miscellany kept in the National Library of Parisunder the signature Code Slave 73. The Glagolitic text is compared with a matching Latin text from the 12th century. The distribution and functionality of selected examples are determined, which also reveals certain stylistic peculiarities oftranslators/writers in creating the selected variant of literary language. In addition to the paper in Latin transliteration, the text of the studied epistle and two texts of heavenly epistles from Glagolitic manuscripts of the 18th century were published.

This paper analyzes the covers of the weekly newspaper Novosti, on which the current refugee and migrant crisis is depicted with illustrations where various verbal and visual signs recontextualize ...the motif of barbed and razor wire. The symbolic, satiric, and metaphoric potential of barbed wire is discussed, and its functions in the narrative on migrants are defined. The examples are categorized according to the distinct semantic characteristics of acting on the body and enclosing space, and the presented research model confirms that the pronounced artistic and critical functionality of the motif of barbed wire lies precisely in the potential of establishing an antithesis that is simultaneously also an element of the satirical dialectic and the source of metaphoric interpretations.
This work consists of a critique publication of the colophon
text in verse form, which was written in 18th century cursive Glagolitic script
at the end of a book (kvadirnica) of Invocations, compiled ...by the priest Anton
Franki from Omišalj, along with the remaining paratexts from the same book.
Special consideration is paid to the discourse characteristics, as determined
by the author’s claim to the right of remuneration for his scribal work.
This paper investigates the contrast of eating and speaking from the theoretical standpoint of cognitive semantics, as it appears in plays written by Ivo Brešan. These examples are mediated by literary archetypes and conventional expressions based on the ideas are food and the mind is a container conceptual metaphors. They are also a specific way to problematize language in new folk plays. Starting from the classical cognitive view (Lakoff and Johnson 1999), and Deleuze’s (2015) dialectics of eating and speaking as a relationship between the inner and the outer, the paper articulates the duality of the cultural model of banquet: manifestations of the exchange of ideas, consciousness and spirituality, and manifestations of hedonism, inner, unconsciousness and physical. This duality in Brešan’s plays has a specific social-critical form

This paper analyses individual Croatian slurs by which a negative attitude is expressed towards the identities of ethnic and other social groups. The theoretical framework is provided by several ...theoretical postulates which take slurs into consideration as words with full meaning, whose meaning is paradigmatically offensive despite their actual context, and thus place them in a separate category besides expressive and descriptive words rather them among expressive words alone (Croom), while stressing the importance of the role of the stereotype (Miščević) and considering contexts as aggregates of the ideologies and practices on which negative stereotypes are based (Hom). Taking into consideration the groups who are the target of these slurs and the speakers who use them, the slurs are classified into the following subtypes: racial, ethnic and regional. The negative and stereotypical characteristics which are, by means of idiomatic expressions, attributed to certain groups are divided as follows: speech, appearance, character, occupation, place and religion. The examples reveal that lexemes, when viewed diachronically, can change their semantic features (slurs can originate from either descriptive or expressive words, but can also become general offenses and are as such close to expressive words; on the other hand they can lose their negative characteristics). The analysis of the slurs shows how a model for the typology of slurs should necessarily include not only stereotypical categories and specific features but also the context, regardless of the paradigmatic full meaning of the slurs themselves.
•Discusses recent views on slurs and possibilities of their application in Croatian.•Discusses relationship among slurs, stereotypes and idioms.•Discusses subtypes of slurs according to racial, ethnic and regional properties.•Provides analysis of diachronic changes of slurs and of levels of derogation.•Suggests that semantic changes of slurs are historically and socially motivated.
This paper deals with semantics of Pelegrin, a narrative poem written in the 16th century by Mavro Vetranović. The author categorises and interprets, from a cognitive point of view, literal and ...metaphorical expressions that are focusing on the mind, primarily the expressions of the concepts of consciousness, thoughts, and ants. The conceptual content, the embodiment and the cultural frames of the studied examples are considered. By analysing the conceptual content and emphasizing the universal grounding of metaphorical expressions, the focus from the interliterary influences is shifted to the images of unconsciousness as essential properties of the meanings produced in the poem.
