Sugars, organic acids, phenolics and anthocyanins in fruits of 13 sweet cherry cultivars: Badascony, Burlat, Early Van Compact, Fercer, Fernier, Ferprime, Lala Star, Lapins, Noire de Meched, Sylvia, ...Vesseaux, Vigred (red-coloured) and Ferrador (bi-coloured) were quantified by HPLC. Sweet cherry cultivars of different pomological characteristics and different time of ripening were evaluated sensorily. The aim of this study was to assess content of primary and secondary metabolites of 18 plum cultivars selected in Serbia. Autochthonous cultivar ʻCrvena Ranka’ exhibited the highest level of total sugars (174.3 g/kg FW) while cultivar ʻMildora’ had the highest sugars/acids ratio (17.2). Cultivar ʻNada’ also contained high sugars/acid ratio as well as a high level of glucose and total sugars. Compared to the other cultivars, ʻNada’ had a higher content of anthocyanins (27.14 mg/100 g FW), ʻCrvena Ranka’ neochlorogenic acid (23.21 mg/100 g FW) and flavanols (86.15 mg/100 g FW) but also the highest antioxidant activity. The PCA analysis confirmed that ʻNada’ and ʻCrvena Ranka’ demonstrated better results in terms of sugars and antioxidant activity than the standard cultivars grown in Serbia and can be recommended for increased plum growing for fresh consumption, processing and in the breeding of plum with enhanced nutritional content.
The influence of eggplant grafting on tomato rootstock was evaluated during the two growing seasons. Yield, quality traits, and individual phenolics in fruits were assessed. Three commercial ...varieties and one landrace were used as scions. Grafting significantly increased eggplant yield and decreased the presence of calyx prickles. The effect of grafting on the accumulation of major phenolic constituents in eggplant fruit was inconsistent: in the year with less solar radiation and lower mean daily air temperatures, grafting decreased phenolic content in commercial variety/rootstock fruit and increased the content in landrace/rootstock fruit. An opposite effect in the latter combination was observed in the year with improved conditions for eggplant cultivation. The browning potential of fruit pulp was highly dependent on variety/landrace and partly also on grafting combination. Differences in correlations between phenolic constituents and browning potential (positive for varieties and negative for landrace) could also be ascribed to the importance of other antioxidants for diminished eggplant pulp browning.
The process of physiological ageing in woody plants is a very important factor influencing adventitious rooting. However, there is a lack of knowledge of biochemical backgrounds triggering ageing and ...consequently, rhizogenesis. Experiments with
Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’ leafy cuttings of three different physiological ages (adult (over 40-year-old stock plants), semi-adult (5-year-old cutting plants) and juvenile (5-year-old
in vitro plants)) were conducted in 2009. Half of the cuttings were banded ca. 3
cm above the bottom of the cutting with aluminum wire prior to insertion into the substrate to block the polar auxin transport. IBA, which was exogenously applied to the cuttings, could only be detected in the base of the cuttings on the first day after severance. Juvenile cuttings tended to have the highest values, but the effect was age specific. Later, the detection was not possible, regardless of the age. The IAA profile in cutting bases was similar for all physiological ages, reaching the peak on the first day after severance. Juvenile cuttings, in which the stems had been banded before insertion, contained more IAA in their bases on day 1 compared to the stems, which were not banded. These cuttings presumably transported absorbed auxin mainly via phloem, and not via mass flow like semi-adult and adult cuttings, where IAA concentrations were similar or even greater in non-banded cuttings compared to banded ones. These cuttings also tended to exhibit the best rooting results. The IAA-Asp accumulation was especially strong in adult cuttings, which contained significantly more aspartate on the first and third days after severance when compared with semi-adult and juvenile cuttings.
The accumulation of anthocyanins and the evolution of fruit colour were investigated during ripening of
Prunus domestica L. Using HPLC, the fruit of the ‘Jojo’, ‘Valor’, ‘Čačanska rodna’ and ...‘Čačanska najbolja’ cultivars were quantified for anthocyanins during a 25-day period of ripening (a 33-day period in the case of ‘Jojo’). The major anthocyanin was cyanidin 3-rutinoside which, in ripe fruits, ranged from 4.1 to 23.4
mg/100
g FW (from 52.6% to 73.0%). It was followed by peonidin 3-rutinoside (from 6.5% to 37.9%), cyanidin 3-glucoside (from 1.8% to 18.4%), cyanidin 3-xyloside (from 4.7% to 7.8%) and peonidin 3-glucoside (from 0.0% to 0.4%). ∗, chroma and hue angle, of partially ripe plums were higher than those in the ripe fruit, but the CIRG index of partially ripe fruit was always lower than that of ripe fruit. The total anthocyanins were weakly correlated with each of the colour parameters; their relationships varied between cultivars and ripening stage. Correlation coefficients between individual anthocyanins and colour parameters in ripe plums were cultivar-dependent.
Quality changes during fruit ripening after the appearance of fruit colour of four
Prunus domestica L. plum cultivars, ‘Jojo’, ‘Valor’, ‘Čačanska rodna’ and ‘Čačanska najbolja’, were investigated ...during 25 or 33 day periods. Fruit samples were analyzed for fruit weight, firmness, soluble solids content, fruit colour, content of sugars (glucose, fructose, sorbitol and sucrose), organic acids (malic, fumaric and shikimic acids), phenolics (neochlorogenic acid,
p-coumaroylquinic acid, chlorogenic acid and rutin) and anthocyanins (cyanidin-3-rutinoside and peonidin-3-rutinoside). Ripening resulted in statistically increased fruit weight and soluble solids, decreased fruit firmness, darker colour of fruits, increased concentration of total sugars, decreased concentration of total acids, and increased concentration of anthocyanins. There was no influence of ripening on the content of phenols. The results show significant influences of cultivar on fruit weight, soluble solids content, firmness, fruit colour, concentration of total acids, SUAC index, concentration of total phenols and anthocyanins in European plums.

The study was aimed at assessing chemical composition of fruits of plum cultivars ʻČačanska Lepoticaʼ and ʻJojoʼ grafted on four rootstocks with different mechanisms of resistance to Plum pox virus (PPV): sensitivity, ʻWavitʼ and ʻWeiwaʼ and hypersensitivity, ‘Docera 6’ and ‘Dospina 235’. The cultivar significantly influenced on content of sugars and organic acids, with the highest values in cultivar ʻJojoʼ. The highest content of sucrose, sorbitol and total sugars were found in ʻWeiwaʼ, and all individual and total acids were higher in fruits from trees grafted on ʻWavitʼ. On the one hand ‘Čačanska Lepotica’ had a high content of malic acid, but on the other hand a low content of citric and fumaric acids, regardless of the rootstock. The most abundant phenolic compounds, phenolic acids and flavanols, were shown to be at the highest level in the combinations ʻČačanska Lepoticaʼ/ʻDocera 6ʼ and ʻJojoʼ/ʻWavitʼ, whereas less abundant phenolic compounds, flavonols and anthocyanins, were the highest in the combinations ʻČačanska Lepoticaʼ/ʻWavitʼ and ʻJojoʼ/ʻWeiwaʼ. In order to improve nutritive fruit quality and the technology of growing, as well as to delay the spread of PPV, rootstocks ʻWavitʼ and ʻWeiwaʼ can be recommended for further promotion in modern plum plantations.

L.) phenophases (leafing, flowering) was investigated. Meteorological and phenological data for five cultivars were analysed over the periods 1969–1979 (P1) and 1994–2007 (P2) in Maribor, Slovenia. Phenological data series were correlated strongly to the temperature of the preceding months (
R
2
: 0.64–0.98) and better correlated to daily maximum and mean temperatures than to daily minimum temperatures. About 75% of phenophases displayed a tendency towards earlier appearance and a shorter flowering duration during P2, which could be explained by the significant temperature changes (+0.3°C/decade) from December to April between 1969 and 2007. An increase in air temperature of 1°C caused an acceleration in leafing by 2.5–3.9 days, with flowering showing higher sensitivity since a 1°C increase promoted male flowering by 7.0–8.8 days and female flowering by 6.3–8.9 days. The average rate of phenological change per degree of warming (days earlier per +1°C) did not differ significantly between P1 and P2. An estimation of chilling accumulation under field conditions during 1993–2009, between 1 November and 28 February, showed that all four of these months contributed approximately similar amounts of accumulated chilling units. The growing degree days (GDD) to flowering were calculated by an estimated base temperature of 2°C and 1 January as a starting date, given the most accurate calculations. In general, thermal requirements were greater in P2 than in P1, although this difference was not significant. Longer-time series data extended to other agricultural and wild plants would be helpful in tracking possible future changes in phenological responses to local climate.
The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB; Halyomorpha halys Stal.) has become a significant pest in Slovenia, especially in apple, pear, peach, and cherry orchards. In our study, apple fruit of the apple ...cultivar ‘Red Pinova’ were evaluated for visual injury and sugar, organic acid, and phenolic contents. The chemical composition of the area around the puncture wound, the uninjured part of the infested apple, was compared to, as a control, only uninjured apples. There was a significant response of the apple around the puncture wound, resulting in an 11.9 g/kg FW higher total sugar content, a 1.4 g/kg FW lower total organic acid content, and an 11.9 g/kg FW higher total phenolic content compared with control apples. A strong phenolic response in the puncture wound area, with high flavanol and hydroxycinnamic acid contents, with increases of 118% and 237%, respectively, compared with control apples, was detected. The brown marmorated stink bug induces a strong phenolic response in the injured area of the apple. The results of this study illustrated how apple fruit responds to the BMSB injury, not only sensorily (visual injury, odor), but also chemically in the form of metabolic responses.
